AFL (Australian Rules Football)

General Overview

AFL is a uniquely Australian sport combining running, kicking, catching, and teamwork. Fast-paced and exciting, it helps children build coordination, strength, and decision-making. With modified junior rules, it’s a fun introduction to this national game.

AFL is a growing sport in the Andrews Cup program, supported by AFL Queensland. Modified formats such as AFL9s are used to ensure accessibility and enjoyment for students in Years 4 to 6. The game builds kicking, handballing, catching and decision-making skills, all within a fun, inclusive environment.

It promotes teamwork, endurance and game sense.

Years 4 to 6

Event information

ELIGIBILITY

Each school shall be represented by one entry in any one event.

In individual events, where divisions occur, the school must rank its competitors in descending order.

Ranking of relay teams, where divisions occur, must be done on the same principle.

Where divisions occur in an event, a competitor shall not be permitted to enter more than one division.

Ages shall be:

  • 12 years & over
  • 11 years
  • 10 years
  • 9 years
  • 8 years & under

A competitor may compete only in her own age group, with the exception for relay events where a competitor may compete up an age group if that age group is short of competitors.

If relay teams are short of competitors, a competitor from a lower division or age group can compete again to allow a team to be entered. EG: ‘C’ Division competitor into a ‘B’ or ‘A’ Division event. A competitor may compete in an unlimited number of events in their age group. A competitor must not compete down a division, however. EG: ‘A’ Division then into a ‘B’ or ‘C’ Division event.

SPECTATORS

All spectators are required to sign in before entering the venue and appropriate etiquette is required at all times.  Please refer to the Policies on this site for more information.

Photography

Please follow our Photography statement in regards to permissible photography. An official Andrews Cup Association photographer will be permitted access to the competition floor at any time and will wear an orange bib for identification purposes.

Pets

Pets are not permitted at Andrews Cup events. Thank you for your support with this.
